Featured Blogger: Margo Porras -NachoMamasBlog.com

We recently interviewed Latina Mom Bloggers member, Margo Porras. Margo Porras originally started blogging to promote her business.  She soon realized that, not only was she good at it, but she loved communicating this way.  If you’ve read any of Margo’s blogs you’ll find that she is very passionate about her writing and about the people in her life. Every time I read her blogs I get goosebumps because her posts are full of emotion and inspiration.   In addition to  Nacho Mama’s Blog, she writes a blog for her Jockey Person to Person fashion business, Nacho Mama’s Style and she writes columns for San Diego Momfia and Rock On Mommies.   She is a Latina Mom Blogger with Hispanic market and general market appeal.

This interview features Margo Porras background,  blogging experience and her love of Charro (yes, Charro).  You’re going to be in love with her and Charro  after this interview as well.

1. Something interesting about your blog is that you have a background as an Interior Designer.  How has your background helped you with blogging?  What differentiates your blog from others?

I read A LOT of blogs!  I always say that the #1 mistake that most bloggers make is that they forget that the internet is a VISUAL MEDIUM. Being a designer, I know that the look of my blog is an integral part of the content and my readers’ overall impression of me.  What makes every blog special is the blogger’s point of view. In my case, I like to say that Nacho Mama’s Blog is “The Nate Berkus Show meets Charo at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.” So far I’ve lived a life full of design, salsa and bellylaughs, with just enough drama to make me want to stick around until the end. Along the way I’ve picked up an EXTREMELY diverse collection of interests from Beethoven to blackjack, plus many tips for living a life that’s lovable, no matter what gets thrown into the mix.

2. Who is the target audience of your blog and what data can you provide us about the demographics of your audience?

Many of my readers find Nacho Mama’s Blog either through twitter or from the other blogs that I write for. MANY of them are moms and (of course) I have a wonderful Latina following. Because I’m pretty vocal about following the Weight Watchers plan, I also get women who are interested in living a healthy, balanced and FUN life. I even have a small but loyal following of men! They like to stay under the radar, though.

3. What is your favorite post you have written and why?

My favorite posts are definitely the ones concerning my Latina upbringing. If I had to pick one, it would be “Raised on Chicano Soul” about my love for Chicano Soul Music from the 60s (my uncle was a founder of The Mixtures). The hardest post for me to write was “Making a Short Story Long: My Story” because it was so personal, but it resulted in my most treasured comments from my readers.

4. If you weren’t a blogger, what other field can you see yourself  working in?
First of all, I think I’d be a blogger no matter what I did for a living! I’m a big believer in goal setting, though.  I attended Jockey’s Person to Person Fall Fashion Preview and had the honor to meeting the JockeyP2P Head Designer Sunil Ramnchandani. He designed my yellow coat which I will be styling at BlogHer conference.  I also recently celebrated my birthday and made a goal to become Jockey Person to Person’s first ever LATINA Director of Sales by this time next year. However,  I want to do more than just sell the clothes, I want to help other women to realize their dreams by “playing a bigger game” in their own lives. Fingers crossed for me, chicas! Then after that? I’d love to be the first Latina to have a lifestyle tv show.  I could talk about my dreams all day!

5. What advice would you have for a mother who is thinking about starting a blog but may not know where/how to begin? What can you tell them about maintaining balance between home and work?

The best advice I can give any mom is just really just to Be Yourself. You ARE enough! I see so many “mommybloggers” who try to be all things to all people so they can boost their numbers, get sponsors, etc. If you forget about the stats and just share your true self, people WILL connect with you, I promise! And the home and work balancing act? We all struggle with it. I’m always at my best when I’m clear about my priorities and where I want to go, and then schedule around that. And we ALL have to remember to take time for ourselves! Nobody wants to hear from a burnt-out Mami.

6. Tell us about three people that you admire and why?

Only three? OK, lol! Well, definitely Kathy Cano-Murillo (The Crafty Chica) because she’s one of the only people I know who does as many different things as I do! Kathy has been a role-model of mine for many years and recently I had the pleasure of taking an online course with her on DIY publicity for independent artists (and bloggers) that was a real “game changer’ for all of us in the class. If you ever have a chance to take a course with Kathy, DO IT. Secondly? Yes, Charo! I LOVE CHARO. She’s sexy, ageless, extremely talented and intelligent enough to realize that “Cuchi-Cuchi” was the road to the bank. And I admire her for speaking out against the cruelty of bullfighting. And lastly, Rupaul. Because he is living proof that life is too short not to enjoy it, no matter WHAT you want to be. Plus? We were born in the same hospital!

7. What is your favorite life or business quote?

“Only those are unwise who have never dared to be fools.” -Elsie de Wolfe, the world’s first interior designer and a VERY unconventional lady!

8. What is the most important business habit you have?

I don’t do anything or work with anyone I’m not truly enthusiastic about. Again, life is too short! I’d rather keep my crappy car another year than make millions doing something I hate. Because the well-being of my spirit cannot be bought for any amount. Seriously.

9. Are there any exciting campaigns you are currently working out you would like to share with our readers?

I’ve been doing some wonderful social media stuff with Jockey Person to Person, of course! I’m also currently doing something with Ross Dress for Less, who I’ve loved working with in the past.

10.Will we see you at BlogHer 2011 Conference?  What session are you most excited about?

YES YOU WILL! I’m most excited for “We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Recession: Frugal Blogging Is Always in Fashion ” just because the title is so intriguing! And then, of course, there are the parties.

10 Simple Tips to Prepare for BlogHer!

I’ve attended over 8 blogging related events this year and have found it important to have a plan and  prepare in advance for events before attending.

Here are 10 simple tips for you to use if you are going to BlogHer or preparing for another blogging event:

  1. Business Cards:   Grab your business cards and stuff them into the suitcase to make sure you don’t forget them.  If you do not have any business cards, order them now to ensure you have a way to connect with people that you meet at the conference.   You may also want to add a QR Code to your website to make your business card interesting and give potential leads a way to quickly access your website.
  2. BlogHer Agenda & Parties:  Make a personal schedule using the BlogHer agenda, Sponsored Promotions, BlogHer Geekbar Workshops and all the parties you will be attending. Printout all the EventBrite tickets prior to event as some of the events require the printouts for entrance into the event.  Email yourself your agenda for easy access via your mobile device and place copy of your BlogHer agenda and printed tickets in a folder.
  3. Make your List and Check it Twice: The best way to manage your contacts is to make a list of people you want to connect with at BlogHer. A fun way to meet people is to make sure to sit at a different table for sessions, breakfast, lunch & dinner.
  4. Electronics: Purchase batteries for all the electronics you plan on taking to BlogHer.  Don’t take a laptop unless you plan on writing while you are traveling.  Take extension cords for all your electronics as well.
  5. Travel Itinerary: Printout all your flight and hotel accommodation information prior to the event. Familiarize yourself with the area, especially if you are traveling to offsite events.
  6. Media Kit, Media Kit, Media Kit: There will be several PR agencies and Brands at the event. Be proactive and print out a couple copies of your media kit to share with prospective brands and PR agencies.  If you need procedures to create a media kit, check out How to Create a Media Kit blog.
  7. What to wear: The best outfit to wear is whatever makes you comfortable.   There is no specific dress code.  However, if you’re only packing semi-casual clothing, also take an outfit for a night on the town and professional outfit just in case.  You want to feel good in your own skin so make sure to take  clothes that makes you comfortable and feel fabulous.
  8. Be Professional & Practice your Pitch: You will definitely have an opportunity to talk to  brands and agencies face to face.   Don’t be afraid to speak to brands about yourself and opportunities you are interested in.   The brands & PR agencies will remember your smiling face,  enthusiasm and  professionalism.  Initiative can take you a long way in building relationships with brands for upcoming campaigns. Grab your friend or your spouse and start practicing your pitch.  Practice will help you feel comfortable and give you self confidence  to speak with agencies and  brands.  Remember, part of the reason the brands are there is because they want to meet YOU.
  9. Be Social: Start connecting with  other people that are attending BlogHer prior to the event.  Reach out via Twitter or Facebook.  You can use #blogher twitter hashtag to start the conversation with other bloggers attending the conference. You can find the Latina Mom Bloggers community online on Twitter by following #latinamoms hashtag.  Blogher community is also sharing a lot of tips for BlogHer conference.  If you haven’t already done so, read the blogs of people you want to build relationships with and provide feedback.   Commenting on peoples blogs is another way to build relationships. You may also want to consider sending a tweet to people you would like to meet and network online before meeting face to face.  Use a genuine, authentic & personable voice in your blog comments, tweets and/or facebook updates.
  10. Don’t sweat the small stuff: If this is your first time attending BlogHer, relax and have fun.  There are plenty opportunities to meet everyone you want to meet.  Most importantly, take time for yourself in between sessions to just relax and breathe.

Looking forward to seeing you at BlogHer!

Let’s talk about it!  What other simple tips do you recommend for BlogHer?

Blogging 101: How To Contact Companies for Product Reviews

If this is your first time here, please make sure to read our first post Review Blogging 101 Series – How to start a review blog.

OK, so you have a blog and you have people reading your blog. Now, you want to start reviewing products. How long it takes is really up to you. It could take just a couple of months to build the traffic and readership or it can take longer. I’m not going to tell you that you need X amount of traffic or subscribers before you can start working with companies because it really doesn’t work like that. And, to be honest—numbers aren’t everything. Bloggers with a small, but loyal following may be exactly what a company is looking for or a company may prefer to work with a blogger that has a lot of traffic. It really just depends. I wouldn’t really worry about that if I were you. I didn’t.

People ask me all of the time–”How do you get the products to review?” What I did was contact companies on my own. For months and months and months, I emailed every company for every product that you saw on my blog. It’s a lot of work. It wasn’t until sometime much later that companies started to contact me. So, today I want to talk about how to contact a company that you are interested in working with on a product review.

The first thing you will want to do is find the correct person to contact at the company. Most of the time, the company website will have a press or media page where you will usually find the name and contact information for their pr person. Very rarely, a company {usually the smaller ones} will not have that information and you can try to email their customer service department instead. The important thing is to make sure your email is going to the right place.

What you should say in the email:

  1. Introduce yourself and your blog .
  2. Let them know why you are writing {i.e. “I am interested in working with you on a review of X product”}.
  3. Tell them why and how their product or service would benefit your readers.
  4. Briefly explain how it will benefit X company to be seen on your blog {i.e. demographics, readership, monthly traffic, etc}.
  5. If your blog is still growing or you don’t have what you feel are “strong” numbers, then maybe offer the company free sidebar advertising for a month {or however long you would like}.
  6. {OPTIONAL} Ask the company to sponsor a giveaway. Explain how a giveaway can provide even further visibility to their company and products through the entries that you will provide for your readers. {i.e. readers will have to visit their website for the first entry, additional entries can include tweeting, blogging, and other social networking sites, building the company email list, etc.}

Now, keep in mind that all of the above should be said in two to three short, concise paragraphs. This is very important because people are busy and will not stick around to read a really long email. So, remember—short and sweet. Also, step 2 is very important! This is how you personalize your email to the company. Let them know what you love about their product or company. This is where your pitch can be made or broken. I also like to attach a media kit that gives the company my detailed traffic and readership statistics. To learn how to create a media kit, make sure to check out the previous Blogging 101 post.

Also, please remember–do not ever, under any circumstance contact a company for a product that you even have even an inkling that you wouldn’t be able to stand behind. I always contacted companies that I either already loved or that had a product that I could see myself or my readers using and loving. I’ll talk about all of this in further detail later on.

I also want to note–don’t take it personally if a company does not respond or they say no. Stay professional and try another company.

Finally, there are review groups that you can join as well. Join Latina Mom Bloggers! This is what we do! We bring Latina bloggers opportunities to work with brands that want to reach Latina moms in an authentic way. There are other blogger networks too so join as many as you want. Some are naturally more difficult to get in to than others, but they are great as they put bloggers directly in touch with companies and products.
