Encuentra el Pathfinder Twitter Party

It’s holiday time so planning for everything from food to family visits and travel is essential. Oftentimes larger families don’t have premium options for getting to activities, gatherings and vacations but the All New Redesigned 2013 Nissan Pathfinder delivers a unique combination of premium functionality.

Today’s families know that they need a vehicle that provides transport for their kids and the equipment that comes with them! Having the flexibility of space for a family up to 7 can leave parents without a premium look for when they venture alone. The All New Nissan Pathfinder is hip and cool during “me time” for parents with the extra benefit of SUV capability to deal with unexpected weather conditions. The new Pathfinder has great options all grounded in innovation.

Latina Mom Bloggers Announces Big Brother Big Sister Latino Bigs Campaign

Latina Mom Bloggers is please to announce the Big Brother Big Sister Latino Bigs campaign to encourage Hispanics to mentor youth.  Each month LatinoBigs will feature 5 of the Big Blogueros and their personal stories.  Big Blogueros are Latino Bigs Ambassadors who are nonprofit advocates and will help spread the word about the importance of mentoring our Hispanic youth by sharing  personal stories of mentorship.

About 20% of the children Big Brother Big Sister program serves are Hispanic – a number on the rise. Yet, only 9% of Bigs are Latino.  Also, more than 70% of the children ready and waiting to be matched with a mentor are boys, yet only 3 of 10 volunteer inquiries come from men.   Children need a boost in self-esteem and encouragement to believe in themselves that only an adult can give. Guidance and consejos can come in the form of sharing a personal story about the difficulties of algebra.

Please join us in congratulating the 15 bloggers who have been selected to help spread the good news about mentoring:

Featured Blogger: Vanessa De Su Mama – DeSuMama.com

Our Featured Latina Mom Blogger this month is Vanessa De Su Mama.   Vanessa lives in Las Vegas, Nevada with her husband and two children.  She is a very talented blogger and photographer with a vibrant personality and a captivating smile.

She started blogging because as a new mom she had so much to say to her child.   She wanted to speak to an older Alina, one searching for her own identity, and teach her about her heritage, tell her that she was made from love, and why she should be proud. Being biracial and of a bicultural familia, Vanessa wanted to make certain her daughter loved herself, and the family she comes from.

De Su Mama was born out of the deep desire to leave a legacy to her child. As  her motherhood has matured, so has De Su Mama. Her mission now includes helping other mothers understand the importance and the ways they can build a legacy for their own children.

Vanessa’s blog is written in a mother’s voice and perspective, one that chooses to see the beauty of our world and teaches empowerment, love and acceptance of all cultures. In addition to building a legacy for her children, and helping other mothers to do the same, she uses personal stories and images to show the beauty of a mixed brown family doing their best to raise good kids.

Our candid interview with  Vanessa De Su Mama:

o Tell us about your audience and what kind of content and information are they are looking for.

My readers are amazing, and highly engaged. They come to De Su Mama to see my photography and kids, read my letters de amor and to learn tips on healthy parenting. As I get ready to re-launch De Su Mama, my mission expands to include helping mothers learn how and why building a legacy for their child is so important.

o How do brands work with you to reach your audience?

I work with brands in the capacity of reviews, giveaways and sponsored posts. Brands looking to fully capitalized on my passionate writing and engaged audience seek a more intimate relationship of blog ambassadorship. For example, my role as a proud Latina Britax Blogger has created a mutually beneficial relationship for De Su Mama readers, Britax and myself. It is a relationship I value greatly, and my work for Britax reflects that passion.

o Do you ever refuse to review products you don’t use or believe in?

Yes, of course! Not every opportunity is a good opportunity, or fit, for my blog. If the product is not something I would advise my own children to use, then I could not ethically review it on De Su Mama.

o Do you support any particular non-profit organization or cause through your blog?

I am discussing that option with one of the only Las Vegas organizations that offer Spanish/Bilingual parenting and mommy & me classes. When Alina was a baby, I took her solely for the language immersion; they are amazing! But government budget cuts mean a reduction in class offerings and the amount of parents they are able to reach. My hope is to assist this organization with their social media funding campaign and name them as the primary non-profit of De Su Mama. More news coming soon!

o Do you have news about any recent or upcoming campaign news that you would like to share?

I am re-launching De Su Mama with a newly designed site and expanded mission of helping other moms build a legacy for their children. The new site is beautifully designed, with meaning and symbolism behind every element. I am so proud to call it my new virtual home. The new site should be online this week and I welcome our Latina Mom Bloggers community to come check it out and say hola!

o What advice would you have for a Latina who is thinking about starting a blog but may not know where/how to begin? What can you tell them about maintaining balance between home and work?

First, I believe that this home/work balance ideology was coined by someone that wasn’t a mother. I never feel balanced! The idea is so illusive and subjective, and really, once you become a Mom, balance is nearly impossible. But I do have professional goals, and I struggle to maintain my ambitions and mothering obligations in ‘balance’. The one note I will make is to be present wherever you are. When I am mothering, I am present with my children. And, in order to be 100% present in my work, staying awake after my infant’s 4am feeding is usually what happens. So, not sleeping so that I can work when the kids sleep is what my ‘balance’ looks like. I’m sure that will change as my babies grow up.

I would tell a new blogger, and specifically a Latina blogger, to (1) decide what your passion is and how you plan to deliver that message to your readers. Do you love to write? Shoot video? Take photographs? Is party planning your thing? DIY, cooking, fashion? Provide something to your readers and figure out how your message will best resonate within them. And (2) reach for the stars! There is so much opportunity out there, enough for everyone. So, to feel purposed and happy, a Latina blogger needs to remain focused on her ultimate goal in blogging and go after it! That’s what I tell myself everyday – to stay focused and grateful, and remember that the right success is out there for me if I’m willing to work for it.

o What is your best photography tip for bloggers?

Imagery is so important for bloggers. Pictures are fundamental to your storytelling, so be sure to know the basics of photography and post editing. When shooting, I try to locate an interesting light source and use it to make my photos more dynamic. Also, since I like my photos crisp, I almost always sharpen my images for web viewing.

o Do you have Twitter, Facebook or other social media contact information you would like to share?

I can be found on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and all of social media as @DeSuMama or http://facebook.com/DeSuMama

o If you weren’t a full time blogger, what other field can you see yourself  working in?

If I weren’t blogging and raising babies, I would want to be writing and inspiring change. I have a passion for the literary art form and making this world a more tolerant and cultured place for our children. Seeing my name in print is a fanatical obsession that I keep my mind focused on, especially on the days that being a full time blogger seems daunting.

o What is the best book you’ve recently read and why?

Oh, how I miss reading! I truly have no time these days. But, during my 3 hour flight to New Orleans for the inaugural Niche Mommy Conference, I read Make It Your Business: Dare to Climb the Ladder of Leadership by Sylvia M. Montero, a book I won during a #LatinaLeadership twitter party. It was the perfect read before attending my first blogging conference, and is an inspiring story of a Latina who dared to be the best in her business. I recommend it!

o What is your favorite life or business quote?

My favorite quote comes from Maya Angelou’s poem, Touched by an Angel, which was also read at my wedding. The poem in its entirety speaks to the struggles we’ve faced as an interracial couple, and how the love we share liberates us from the ugliness the world tries to throw at us. I find so much strength in my husband’s love:

…And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free.

Can you share what is the most important business habit you have?

I asked my husband what he thought my best business habit is, and he said “beside waking up at 4am to do a post?”  Building a blog and brand takes so.much.work. I guess the best habit is to simply do the work, consistently. Posting at least 4-6 times a week is also a goal I always strive for. {Not that it always happens!}

What Are you favorite things to do/hobbies when your not blogging?

I love literature, travel and photography; my soul needs them all occasionally. But, on a day to day basis, if I’m not blogging and building my brand, I am spending time with my family. That’s all I have time for in a 24 hour day at the moment.

What are your favorite gadgets?

My favorite gadgets are photography related… I love it all! Especially lenses whose apertures drop below 2.8 for a zoom and 1.4 for a prime.

Latina Mom Bloggers is honored to announce its media partnership with The Passport Party Project™. The Passport Party Project is a philanthropic global awareness initiative that will gift 100 underserved girls with their very first passports during a nationwide traveling campaign that began in September 2011 and will culminate in San Juan, Puerto Rico in April 2013 with a travel-themed Wrap Party.
The Passport Party Project was founded by award-winning travel blogger Tracey Friley in an effort to instill an appreciation and love of travel among multicultural communities. In June 2011 Tracey created The Passport Party, a one-day, travel-themed global awareness event for girls 11-15 that provided them with the necessary tools to obtain their very first passport. The rest is history, and since then the project has traveled to cities across the country including Austin, TX, Miami, FL, New York, NY and Washington DC helping young girls see the amazing opportunities that a life with travel can provide. Latina Mom Bloggers was thrilled to be part of the Miami Passport Party in April 2012, and we look forward to continuing to support this amazing organization as a media partner.

Featured Blogger: Sili Recio – MyMamihood.com

Our Feature blogger is Sili Recio of the popular blog MyMamihood.  Sili is a graduate of Rollins College with a degree in Psychology.  She has been in corporate America for over 13 years where she held positions in category management, business analysis and IT project management.

She has always considered herself a writer until she saw the movie Motherhood with Uma Thurman.  After seeing the movie on a Saturday she seriously considered blogging and by Tuesday she had her blog up and running. Sili was recently awarded the Emory O. Jackson Award for Outstanding Performance in Journalism for her work on her blog, My Mamihood.

Sili recently launched  Mami Ink Media, LLC a creative services company that will provide Dream Coaching, Social Media Management and Writing Services to businesses and individuals looking to leave their mark in the world.

o What do you believe helps differentiate your blog from others?
I think every blog is special because every person puts his or her heart and soul into it. Although my blogging career began after I entered into Mamihood, part of the reason I started was because I wanted people to see and understand that there’s more to motherhood than being a mami. We juggle, deal with and contribute so much more. I feel that my blog shows all of the different facets of my life and that’s what makes it unique.

o Tell us about your audience and what kind of content and information are they are looking for.
I have mamis that tell me they read my posts because they can laugh. I also have mamis that tell me they love my blog because of the heartfelt posts that I sometimes give them. Ultimately, my audience connects with content that touches them. They are looking for what I’m reading, perhaps a little help on something they are going through, for laughter, for perspective and ultimately? I think they’re looking for a little inspiration. The one group of readers that I didn’t expect is my mamis with no children, though.

o How do brands work with you to reach your audience?
Brands work with me by allowing me to write about their products within the scope of my world. I feel that’s something my readers connect with and I’m grateful for that.

o Do you ever refuse to review products you don’t use or believe in?
Absolutely. I feel very strongly that if I can’t be genuine about a product I can’t write about it.

o Do you support any particular non-profit organization or cause through your blog?
Last year I had a Relay for Life team. This is actually the first year since 2004 that I haven’t participated because it was a little difficult with losing mami last February. I am always looking for any way that I can help my community personally, though. I believe that it takes a village and we all have to chip in.

o Do you have news about any recent or upcoming campaign news that you would like to share?
I’ve recently launched my own business so that’s the big big news currently in my life (http://MamiInkMedia.com). It feels suspiciously like giving birth except that I can have the celebratory drink since I’m not nursing.

o What advice would you have for a Latina who is thinking about starting a blog but may not know where/how to begin? What can you tell them about maintaining balance between home and work?
I would tell them to go for it! There are plenty of resources out there (like LMB!) including other bloggers. I’ve found such a supportive community out there, willing to help me navigate the waters. As far as balance? That’s been difficult from the time I was in corporate America. However, I know that careers and jobs can come and go but family is forever. While there may be a time when imbalance is necessary, we must always be clear as to who we are willing and ok with disappointing in the long run.

o Do you have Twitter, Facebook or other social media contact information you would like to share? Me? Twitter?
Oh yes! You can find me @MyMamihood as well as @MamiInkMedia. If you are navigating Facebook, be sure to stop by the ‘hood at http://Facebook.com/MyMamihood.

o If you weren’t a full time blogger, what other field can you see yourself working in?
A trophy wife. I kid! I kid! I was an IT project manager in my last life. I certainly enjoyed that job. Before that? I was a book buyer. Probably my favorite. I’ve always wanted to write but if I wasn’t a blogger and I had my druthers I’d be doing exactly what I’m doing over at Mami Ink Media. I find that I always gravitate towards helping others and I feel that I can do that best when I’m empowering others to live out their dreams.

o Tell us about three people that you admire and why?
My mind just went blank and I can only think of one: my mami. She was not only my best friend but also the type of woman that everyone gravitated towards. Not because of her possessions or social standing but because of her heart. Mami was genuine and strong beyond measure right to the end. And she never let anyone dictate her actions. She lived life by her rules and most of her rules gravitated around family and love, caring and giving.

o What is the best book you’ve recently read and why?
I don’t like book questions. Too many books I love and I’m usually reading a few at a time. I am in the middle of the last book in the Hunger Games trilogy and I’m loving it. YA fiction is a favorite of mine and it makes me sad to think about how so many people pass up on such great literature because it says “YA” on it. That’s like me passing up a cute blouse because it’s in the juniors section. It should just not be done.

o What is your favorite life or business quote? Before I answer that I want to say that I created a quotes database for myself years back. I have about 20 pages of favorites. But one quote? My current signature holds this quote by Paulo Coelho: “You have to take risks. We will only understand the miracle of life fully when we allow the unexpected to happen.” I try to live by that in life and in business.

o Can you share what is the most important business habit you have?
The most important habit? I don’t give up. I get up every day and do all I can. I also allow myself those days when there’s just too much going on and I need a break but then I dust myself off and get back in the game. If I say I’m following my dreams then, I have to keep moving right along with them.
