Commit to Be a Mentor this New Year – Big Brothers Big Sisters #LatinoBigs Tweet Chat

As the New Year approaches, we have the opportunity to reflect. Most of us are thankful for mentors that have impacted our lives in one way or another. Did someone help guide your professional career? Did a coach, a teacher or a friend help motivate you to pursue your dreams? Mentors can have such a positive impact on a young person’s life path. Let’s share our appreciation for mentors as we talk about supporting our own Latino youth in the upcoming year.

Are you ready to step up and be a mentor? How will you volunteer to help Latino youth in 2013? Please join Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of America “Latino Bigs” campaign and Latina Mom Bloggers as we focus on propelling our Latino youth to achieve their potential and discuss how YOU can volunteer to become a Latino Big in 2013.  Latino Bigs will be on hand to share their current stories of supporting a ‘little.’

LatinoBigs change the lives of children. Compared to children not in the BBBS program, Latino Littles are LESS likely to skip school, use drugs and begin drinking alcohol. Children matched in Big Brothers Big Sisters programs maintain or improve educational success, avoidance of risky behaviors and socio-emotional competency.  Latino Bigs participants are also more likely to graduate and be prepared for employment.

If not us, who?  If not now, when?  Volunteer Now. Make 2013 your year to Mentor Latino youth!

Please join Big Brothers Big Sisters Latino Bigs program along with Latina Mom Bloggers as we focus on propelling our Latino youth to achieve their potential and discuss how YOU can contribute to their success.

Walk-N-Roll Twitter Party for Spina Bifida!

Laura Tellado, known as Laurita by her friends, was born with Spina Bifida in Puerto Rico in 1986 with myelomeningocele, the severest form of spina bifida.  In 1990, her family moved to Orlando, Florida in order to give her the best possible care. Now, as an adult, Laura is a full-time advocate for Spina Bifida, working to bring a public voice to the cause.  As a 22-year member of the Spina Bifida Association of Central Florida, she’s doing her part to shed light on this condition by raising money for the Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida.

Laura has us and a host of other amazing communities and organizations to help her to raise money online for Team Holdin’ Out for a Hero until October 27th, when we have our Walk-N-Roll event.

Donations can be as small as $5 or as large as $50,000.  Every cent counts and every dollar will go towards supporting families affected by spina bifida in 22 counties in and around the Central Florida region and supporting educational and awareness efforts.

Latina Mom Bloggers Announces Big Brother Big Sister Latino Bigs Campaign

Latina Mom Bloggers is please to announce the Big Brother Big Sister Latino Bigs campaign to encourage Hispanics to mentor youth.  Each month LatinoBigs will feature 5 of the Big Blogueros and their personal stories.  Big Blogueros are Latino Bigs Ambassadors who are nonprofit advocates and will help spread the word about the importance of mentoring our Hispanic youth by sharing  personal stories of mentorship.

About 20% of the children Big Brother Big Sister program serves are Hispanic – a number on the rise. Yet, only 9% of Bigs are Latino.  Also, more than 70% of the children ready and waiting to be matched with a mentor are boys, yet only 3 of 10 volunteer inquiries come from men.   Children need a boost in self-esteem and encouragement to believe in themselves that only an adult can give. Guidance and consejos can come in the form of sharing a personal story about the difficulties of algebra.

Please join us in congratulating the 15 bloggers who have been selected to help spread the good news about mentoring:

Latina Mom Bloggers Announces Media Partnership with The Passport Party Project

Latina Mom Bloggers is honored to announce its media partnership with The Passport Party Project™. The Passport Party Project is a philanthropic global awareness initiative that will gift 100 underserved girls with their very first passports during a nationwide traveling campaign that began in September 2011 and will culminate in San Juan, Puerto Rico in April 2013 with a travel-themed Wrap Party.
The Passport Party Project was founded by award-winning travel blogger Tracey Friley in an effort to instill an appreciation and love of travel among multicultural communities. In June 2011 Tracey created The Passport Party, a one-day, travel-themed global awareness event for girls 11-15 that provided them with the necessary tools to obtain their very first passport. The rest is history, and since then the project has traveled to cities across the country including Austin, TX, Miami, FL, New York, NY and Washington DC helping young girls see the amazing opportunities that a life with travel can provide. Latina Mom Bloggers was thrilled to be part of the Miami Passport Party in April 2012, and we look forward to continuing to support this amazing organization as a media partner.
